Flinders Street Station. It is our most iconic, well loved and instantly recognisable building. Every day Melbournians have countless happy moments meeting up with loved ones on the concrete steps under the clocks. We enjoy the crispy churros from the stands on the St Kilda Road side. We dress up our station at Christmas time with a gigantic stripey Merry Christmas sign. We smile at the man playing‘moon river’ on his violin in the underpass, and moan at the length of the line at the taxi rank on Friday nights.
Flinders Street station, eventually, maybe, will be getting a make over. In November 2011 the Victoria Government launched a design competition for the revamp and redevelopment of our most iconic building. Today, the 6 finalists were announced and although there still hasn’t been any funding committed to the project, a winner has been chosen.
The winner of the design competition will be revealed on 8 August 2013. However, today a new facet of the competition was launched – the People’s Choice Award. This is where we get to give feedback on each of the designs and choose a favourite. It is intended that the public feedback will eventually inform and refine any future redevelopment works.
So essentially it’s all a long way off, and there is no firm commitment yet (meaning this may never happen). But it is fun to dream. The designs don’t just redevelop the Flinders Street Station building but revamp the whole Flinders Street precinct. They envisage new office buildings, rooftop gardens, a Yarra River amphitheatre, and even a Flinders Street High School! Here are some of the artist’s impressions from the 6 finalist designs.
